A year or so ago I ran into one of my neighbors, Gary Dean, as I was entering a building on my way to visit a client. For me, it was one of those awkward moments when you know you know someone but you?aren?t?sure where you know them from? and then it hits you. Once I realized who it was, Gary and I exchanged ?hellos? and chatted for a few minutes. I asked Gary a little more about what he did and how long he had been working for the company. Imagine my surprise and delight when Gary told me that in 2012 he celebrated 50 years at his current employer. Yes, 50 years!
Recently, the Cicero Group conducted a large research study to better understand the impact service awards have in building a career at a company. They also wanted to better understand the emotions triggered by reaching different milestones or stages in a career. The findings? Building a career with an organization is something many employees aspire to do, even today. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports employees are now staying longer with their company than they have in the last 27 years. Think about it yourself. What do you want from your organization? A place where you feel valued, where you belong, and where you can make a commitment? It?s been proven that when employees feel they work for an organization that cares about their well-being, three important things happen, they:
- Embrace the goals and vision of the organization
- Feel their contributions make a difference
- Become inspired to do great work
This past September, Gary was formally recognized for his 50 years of service. In addition to a celebration highlighting his many accomplishments, Gary also received phone calls from former CEOs and other executives; and the following announcement was placed on the company?s electronic bulletin board.
Gary Dean Celebrates 50 Years!
Congratulations to Gary Dean, Course Materials Systems Analyst, for 50 years of remarkable service to Follett.
Gary is known for his long-time support of our course materials business and many view him as a mentor and a friend. Please join us in congratulating Gary for this incredible achievement.
In addition to the announcement, employees were able to send congratulatory notes to Gary. There were way too many to include here, but they all had a similar sentiment: ?Congratulations Gary on celebrating 50 years!? ?You?re an inspiration to us all!? ?We?re very fortunate to have your expertise.? ?An incredible achievement indeed.?
It?s pretty cool to think of the number of people Gary has helped, the number of clients he has supported, and the number of hours he has spent working on projects on behalf of the company. I add my sincere congratulations to those already received by Gary.
