Moments Of Serenity With Macho & Zeus, SuperSmackDown Airing Live In Canada

- Zeus arrived in WWE in 1989, targeting his No Holds Barred co-star Hulk Hogan, and quickly formed a partnership with Hogan nemeses Randy Savage and Sensational Sherri. Promoting the DVD release of No Holds Barred on July 3, WWE has released a video titled "Moments of Serenity with Macho Man and Zeus."

The video montage features clips of Savage, Zeus and Sherri verbally attacking Hogan and Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake in promotion of their SummerSlam showdown. The villainous group would come up short in their pay-per-view encounter as Hogan struck Zeus with Sherri's loaded purse while the referee was distracted, which was followed by a scoop slam and leg drop for the pinfall victory.

WWE.com has also added Zeus to their Alumni section, who parted ways with the organization in December 1989 after losing a SummerSlam rematch. He resumed his feud with Hogan in World Championship Wrestling in 1996 as a member of The Alliance To End Hulkamania. His band of misfits came up short in a Doomsday Cage Match versus Hogan and Savage at Uncensored?the match is currently airing on WWE Classics On Demand as a great WCW moment.

- SuperSmackDown LIVE will air live on The Score in Canada this Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. (Thanks to Devin Cutting)

- WWE announced Friday via Twitter: "Check in tonight to SmackDown at 8/7 CT on GetGlue.com and receive your Aksana DivaSummer Series sticker."

University of Memphis tuition up 7 percent to $4,117 per semester

University of Memphis is hiking its tuition again, this time by 7 percent for the 2012-13 school year.

The Tennessee Board of Regents has approved tuition hikes that will result in a 7 percent increase for the University of Memphis?

The new tuition rates are effective for the 2012-13 school year.

Students taking 15 hours at the University of Memphis will pay $4,117 per semester, while Southwest students will pay $1,858, according to the Board of Regents. Students at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law will see a 7.3 percent tuition increase this fall to $8,357 per semester.

The Board of Regents has increased tuition for the last three years; U of M saw its tuition rise 11 percent last year based on a 12-hour schedule.

The tuition increases have coincided with reductions in state funding to schools. Tennessee has cut funding to the U of M by $41.7 million in the last four years. Another $1.8 million will be cut this fiscal year.

?Adequate funding is necessary for the University of Memphis to continue its primary goals of providing a high quality education and graduating our students in a timely manner,? Shirley Raines, president of the University of Memphis, said in a statement. ?Still, it is unfortunate that our students must continue to bear the responsibility for closing the gap in state funding and our funding requirements.?

Case study in controlled inventory for Pasadena real estate ? The ...

There are limited examples of how banks are limiting the actual supply of homes on the market.? We know that this is rampant yet it is hard to track down specific examples.? Some tend to think that this leakage of inventory is only happening in lower priced areas.? We will give you a very specific snapshot of a decent neighborhood in Pasadena where this is very obvious.? It will become very obvious to anyone paying close attention how banks are manipulating the market to limit supply to push prices higher.? Yet this is only a temporary trend since many of those buying today are really rushing in thinking there will be a jump in prices and deep down many do not want to miss another housing mania in Southern California.? What is certain is behind the scenes many people are struggling to pay their mortgages even in more affluent neighborhoods where the outside fa?ade is that household income is holding up strongly.? Recent data strongly refutes this assertion but don?t let the facts get in the way.

How to go from modest home purchase to maximum home leverage

Today we examine this home in Pasadena:

    pasadena bank owned

    1225 Leonard Ave Pasadena,?CA?91107

    5 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2,249 square feet

The above home was purchased back in 1998 for $295,000:

    home sale price

Looking at the foreclosure note data, it appears a loan was placed on the home for $236,000.? In other words, someone purchased this home with a 20 percent down payment.? Remember those?? That was the last modest mortgage on the property.? Lenders on the note then included:

    -Rapid Equity Funding

    -AAMES Home Loan

    -Ameriquest Mortgage

    -Countrywide Home Loans

Suffice it to say that this property had some diverse lenders.? What is interesting is the owner already ran into issues back in 2006 when the first Notice of Default was filed.? Since prices were going up refinances provided cover for a few more years.? By the time this home went REO in April it had this as the loan amount:

    distressed pasadena

This home isn?t even listed for sale on the market even though it went REO back in April and as we are constantly reminded, the market is now hot!? What is interesting is that if you look at Pasadena foreclosures, you will find a large number of properties:

    pasadena distressed inventory

Yet many of the REOs do not show up on the MLS even in areas where there is clearly demand.? Just take a look at the area where this home is located:

    pasadena map area

Homes where no price is listed and with a red house icon are in some stage of foreclosure.? These are homes that will be coming online.? Banks are moving on some of these properties as long as they get a certain price point:

    foreclosure timeline

Do you think having more variety would aid home buyers?? Who really benefits by keeping prices high here?? The bank now owns the home.? Hopefully after half a decade of bailouts people realize the main beneficiaries were the big financial institutions and not the public.? All this press about home prices rebounding makes sense in the context of the above controlling nature of the market but also manipulated low rates.? Supply is being massively controlled even in areas where demand is healthy.

Pasadena has many desirable locations but there are a large number of homes where bad mortgages will become REOs.? And many of the distressed properties are fresh with over 160 having an NOD filed recently.? The pipeline isn?t a fixed figure where we go from 100 to 0 in a straight line.? For each two REOs sold, you might have one (or more) enter the pipeline.? Many buyers are unlikely to dig deep into an area analysis like the above but if the press gave greater detail to what is behind the machinery, it is likely that buyers would exercise more caution when buying.? Then again, some simply want to believe that this is the beginning of another mania and don?t want to miss out.? The big difference this time is the government is on the hook for nearly 100 percent of the mortgage originations:

    loan originations

    Source:?? Sober Look

With FHA insured loans defaults rising to historic levels, I?m sure this will turn out well.? It now seems we are in a perpetual bailout cycle.? So yes, if we only look at the controlled figures inventory appears to be constrained and what a stunner that prices are rising in combination with low interest rates.? The big question of course will be the staying power of this trend deep into the fall and winter.

What are your thoughts on the controlled release of housing inventory into the market by banks?

BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill exacerbated existing environmental problems in Louisiana marshes

BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill exacerbated existing environmental problems in Louisiana marshes

    Tuesday, June 26, 2012

The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill temporarily worsened existing manmade problems in Louisiana's salt marshes such as erosion, but there may be cause for optimism, according to a new study.

A study appearing online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found the 2010 spill killed off salt marsh plants 15 to 30 feet from the shoreline and this plant die off resulted in a more-than-doubled rate of erosion along the marsh edge and subsequent permanent marsh habitat loss. Vegetation farther from shore was relatively untouched by the incoming oil.

"Louisiana is already losing about a football field worth of wetlands every hour, and that was before the spill," said Brian Silliman, a University of Florida biologist and lead author of the study. "When grasses die from heavy oiling, their roots, that hold the marsh sediment together, also often die. By killing grasses on the marsh shoreline, the spill pushed erosion rates on the marsh edge to more than double what they were before. Because Louisiana was already experiencing significant erosive marsh loss due to the channelization of the Mississippi, this is a big example of how multiple human stressors can have additive effects."

Marshes are the life's blood of coastal Louisiana because they act as critical nurseries for the shrimp, oysters and fish produced in these waters while helping to sequester significant amounts of carbon. They also protect coastlines from flooding and guard estuarine waters from nutrient pollution.

But the marshes have been suffering for decades as a result of the channelization of the Mississippi River, which has starved them from needed sediments to deter erosion.

    Then came the oil spill.

Researchers observed minimal oil on the surfaces of grasses located more than 45 feet from the shoreline, indicating that significant amounts of oil did not move into interior marshes.

Instead, the researchers found that the tall grasses along the marsh edge acted as wall-like trap to incoming oil slicks, concentrating oil on the marsh edge. This concentration of oil on the shoreline protected interior marshes from oiling but worsened already extreme erosion on the shoreline. As oiled plants died, their roots that hold tight to the sediment perished as well. Already eroding sediment was now exposed to wave action without the effect of the gripping plant roots.

The result: elevated erosion rates for 1.5 years that averaged more than 10 feet of shoreline loss per year -- double the natural rate for this area.

The encouraging results, Silliman said, included significant declines in the oil concentration on the marsh surface over 1.5 years and that unaffected, healthy marsh plants in the marsh interior quickly grew back into marsh die-off areas that had not yet been lost due to heightened erosion.

When the new marsh plant growth grew into the erosive edge of the marsh, Silliman said, the recolonization of the area by the gripping plant roots shut down the oil-elevated erosion rates and returned them to those seen at marsh sites where oil coverage did not occur.

The researchers also found that polyaromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, a carcinogenic byproduct of oil, was 100 percent greater at the Barateria Bay testing site than in reference marshes. This finding provides chemical evidence to support their visual observations that marshes in the affected areas were laden with oil while those in reference areas did not receive significant oiling.

By adding Biochar, a charcoal-based substance, to marshlands, Silliman's team is also using new bioremediation tactics to try to break down PAHs into organic material. If this method is successful, he said, it could be used to supplement naturally occurring microbes in the marsh mud that already oxidize the oil carcinogen. The team is soon to publish those findings.

"This is a new idea applied toward cleaning up PAHs," said UF chemistry professor Andrew R. Zimmerman, a co-author on the paper. "It's possible there's a bunch lurking at the bottom of the bay."

Katy Perry Planning Special Performance For 'Part Of Me' Premiere

Singer will perform on Hollywood Boulevard before hitting red carpet and answering your questions.
    By Christina Garibaldi

    Katy Perry
    Photo:

Katy Perry is finally set to close the final chapter of Teenage Dream with the release of her upcoming film, "Part of Me." The 3-D documentary follows the singer over the course of 2011 as she experiences both highs and lows in her career and personal life.

On Tuesday, June 26, Katy will be hitting the red carpet at Los Angeles' Grauman's Chinese Theatre to premiere "Part of Me," and MTV News will be there to talk to the star. But before Perry walks the carpet, she is treating fans to a special live performance on the famed Hollywood Boulevard.

We want you to get in on the action as well via Twitter, by using the @mtvnews handle and hashtag #askkaty to get your questions answered by Perry herself.

Perry's flick gives fans a rare glimpse into the life of a pop star. For those who couldn't make her California Dreams Tour, the film gives a front-row seat to her concert and shows us what life is really like on the road. Perry also shows an extremely vulnerable side in the film. We get to witness early footage of the star, showing her dealing with her parents' strictness. We also see peeks of her relationship with ex-husband Russell Brand and get an idea of her tireless work schedule.

Perry recently premiered the video for "Wide Awake," a song she wrote for the movie, during her "MTV First," and it was there that she opened up about the film, saying that even though she may be one of the biggest pop stars in the world, she deals with real issues like any other woman.

"There's some scenes that I know people will screenshot and be like, 'Oh, she looks like a fat cow with zits.' But I put those in there because that's a part of me, that's reality, and I'm OK with that now," Perry told MTV News' Sway Calloway. "It's been a process of learning it's OK, and I'm accepting of my own skin, but I think it's important for young kids to see that you don't have to be perfect in order to achieve your dreams, because I think that the world has this strange, skewed perception of successful people, that they're just so perfectly made up, and they have all these possessions that make them who they are, and that's not at all how I got here; I came from nothing. I didn't have anything."

Cyborg system stifles your need to drink water

    19 hrs.

The Japanese design studio Takram was asked to design a water bottle for people to use after a hypothetical future environmental disaster. Takram, imagining what a world would be like with rising sea levels and radioactive disasters, thought that we probably wouldn?t be carrying around water bottles. Instead, they designed an entirely new organ system, to be implanted in the body, that would mean we used less water in the first place.

Its solution, called the Hydrolemic System, involves both harvesting more moisture from the air than our current unmodified bodies are capable of, and also doing more to retain the water we have. The company imagines that system would require us to drink 0.1 cups of water a day.

Inserts that go in our noses convert moisture in the air we breathe into water, and other inserts at the ends of our renal and digestive systems keep water from leaving by those routes. A collar on our neck helps prevent perspiration by turning our body heat into electricity, so it doesn?t make us perspire, losing precious liquid.

Click through the slide show for more details.

Let's?hope for a world in which our designers are just designing water bottles with more convenient handles, rather than ones you have to go to the hospital to have installed.

Egypt's New President To Be Announced Sunday

Egypt will release official results from divisive presidential elections Sunday, the country's top elections commission official said, a highly anticipated announcement that will set the course for Egypt's political future after last year's revolution that ousted longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak but left the rest of his regime intact.

Tensions have risen since the June 16-17 runoff vote between the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohammed Morsi and Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, with both campaigns claiming victory by a narrow margin. The electoral commission postponed official results that had been scheduled to be announced on Thursday, leading to speculation that the military rulers are holding results hostage to bargaining and backroom deals with the Brotherhood on the distribution of power.

Many Egyptians have rallied behind Morsi as a chance to finally rid the country of the old regime, while others support Shafiq as the best bet to counter Islamists and restore stability in the country, which has faced more than a year of mass protests, rising crime economic woes after the 18-day revolution that forced Mubarak to step down on Feb. 11, 2011.

Sunday's announcement could finally determine whether Egypt will be ruled by a member of the long-suppressed fundamentalist Islamic group and make a break with six decades of military rule or remain confined in the parameters of the former regime. In the two cases, the new president will be weakened as the military rulers will be in firm control.

A third possibility is that Egypt remains in a political limbo, if the elections commission decides to annul the runoff vote and call for new elections in some or all constituencies, due to allegations of irregularities by both sides. The military has pledged to hand over power to civilian rule by July 1.

After days of confusion and uncertainty, Farouk Sultan, the head of the Supreme Presidential Election Commission, said Saturday the results would be announced the next day but didn't give further details.

The delay of election results coupled with a series of moves by the ruling military council aimed at consolidating power have largely brought the country to a standstill and raised fears of new violence if protesters are unhappy with the choice of new president.

The Muslim Brotherhood's leaders along with revolutionary groups, have vowed "a new revolution" if their candidate is not the winner, claiming that a loss would prove election fraud orchestrated by the military. Meanwhile, the ruling generals accused Islamists of stirring tension and threatened to crackdown on any violence by any group unhappy with election outcome.

Ex-Penn St. assistant Sandusky guilty of sex abuse

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? For years, the children Jerry Sandusky had preyed upon kept quiet about what the former Penn State assistant football coach did to them in echoing shower stalls, empty hotel rooms and the muffled confines of his basement bedroom.

Late Friday, after a swift trial and less than two days of deliberations, a jury issued an emphatic verdict: Sandusky was guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse, meaning the man once considered a successor to coach Joe Paterno will likely die in prison.

The verdict is not the end of the scandal that took down Paterno and deeply shook the state's most prominent university. It will play out for years in courtrooms and through a set of ongoing investigations.

But the trial did present one piece of finality: Sandusky was taken away in handcuffs to the county jail. Sentencing will be in about three months, but mandatory minimums will keep him behind bars for life.

"One of the recurring themes in this case was, 'Who would believe a kid?'" Attorney General Linda Kelly said. "The answer is, we in Bellefonte, Pa., would believe a kid."

Sandusky, a retired defensive coach, showed little emotion as the verdict was read, giving his wife, Dottie, and family members a half-wave as the county sheriff led him away.

There were only three acquittals among the charges related to 10 victims, eight of whom took the stand to describe fondling, forced oral sex and anal rape. Many of the accusers testified that they had told no one of the abuse that dated as far back as the mid-1990s ? not parents, not girlfriends and not police.

The accuser known in court papers as Victim 6, whose mother alerted authorities in 1998 after Sandusky took her son into a shower, broke down in tears upon hearing the verdicts in the courtroom. Afterward, a prosecutor embraced him and said, "Did I ever lie to you?"

The man, now 25, testified that Sandusky called himself the "tickle monster" in a shower assault. He declined to comment to a reporter afterward. His mother said: "Nobody wins. We've all lost."

One of the three counts for which Sandusky was acquitted concerned Victim 6, an indecent assault charge. The man testified that Sandusky had given him a bear hug in the shower but at one point he just "blacked out."

The other acquittals were an indecent assault charge related to Victim 5, who said Sandusky fondled him in the shower, and an involuntary deviate sexual intercourse charge regarding Victim 2, the boy graduate assistant Mike McQueary saw being attacked in a campus shower.

Almost immediately after the judge adjourned, loud cheers could be heard from a couple hundred people gathered outside the courthouse as word quickly spread that Sandusky had been convicted. The crowd included victim advocates and local residents with their kids. Many held up their smartphones to take pictures as people filtered out of the building.

As Sandusky was placed in the cruiser to be taken to jail, someone yelled at him to "rot in hell!" Others hurled insults and he shook his head no in response.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola was interrupted by cheers from the crowd on the courthouse steps when he said, "The sentence that Jerry will receive will be a life sentence."

In addition to the eight who testified, there were two yet-unidentified victims for whom prosecutors relied on testimony from a university janitor and McQueary, whose account of a sexual encounter between Sandusky and a boy of about 10 years old ultimately led to the Paterno's dismissal and the university president's ouster.

Sandusky did not take the stand in his own defense.

After the verdict was announced, defense attorney Karl Rominger said it was "a tough case" with a lot of charges and that an appeal was certain. He said the defense team "didn't exactly have a lot of time to prepare."

The ex-coach had repeatedly denied the allegations, and his defense suggested that his accusers had a financial motive to make up stories, years after the fact. His attorneys also painted Sandusky as the victim of overzealous police investigators who coached the alleged victims into giving accusatory statements.

One accuser testified that Sandusky molested him in the locker-room showers and in hotels while trying to ensure his silence with gifts and trips to bowl games. He also said Sandusky had sent him "creepy love letters."

Another spoke of forced oral sex and instances of rape in the basement of Sandusky's home, including abuse that left him bleeding. He said he once tried to scream for help, knowing that Sandusky's wife was upstairs, but figured the basement must be soundproof.

Another, a foster child, said Sandusky warned that he would never see his family again if he ever told anyone what happened.

And just hours after the case went to jurors, lawyers for one of Sandusky's six children, Matt, said he had told authorities that his father abused him.

Matt Sandusky had been prepared to testify on behalf of prosecutors, his lawyers said in a statement. The lawyers said they arranged for Matt Sandusky to meet with law enforcement officials but did not explain why he didn't testify.

"This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy," the statement said. It didn't go into details about his allegations.

Defense witnesses, including Dottie Sandusky, described Sandusky's philanthropic work with children over the years, and many spoke in positive terms about his reputation in the community. Prosecutors had portrayed those efforts as an effective means by which Sandusky could camouflage his molestation as he targeted boys who were the same age as participants in The Second Mile, a charity he founded in the 1970s for at-risk youth.

Sandusky's arrest in November led the Penn State trustees to fire Paterno as head coach, saying he exhibited a lack of leadership after fielding a report from McQueary. The scandal also led to the ouster of university President Graham Spanier and criminal charges against two university administrators for failing to properly report suspected child abuse and perjury.

The two administrators, athletic director Tim Curley and now-retired vice president Gary Schultz, are fighting the allegations and await trial.

The family of Paterno, who died exactly five months before Sandusky's conviction, released a statement saying: "Although we understand the task of healing is just beginning, today's verdict is an important milestone. The community owes a measure of gratitude to the jurors for their diligent service. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims and their families."

In a statement, Penn State praised the accusers who testified and said that it planned to invite the victims of Sandusky's abuse to participate in a private program to address their concerns and compensate them for claims related to the school.

Sandusky had initially faced 52 counts of sex abuse. Prosecutors dropped one count and the judge tossed three others during the trial, on grounds two were unproven, one was brought under a statute that didn't apply and another was duplicative.

Horses and skin cancer. | *A blog for Pets*

Skin cancer, or neoplasia, is one of the most common type of cancer diagnosed in horses,
accounting for 45 to 80% of all cancers diagnosed. Sarcoids are the most common type of skin neoplasm and are the most common type of cancer overall in horses.

Squamous-cell carcinoma is the second-most prevalent skin cancer, followed by melanoma. Squamous-cell carcinoma and melanoma usually occur in horses greater than 9-years-old, while sarcoids commonly affect horses 3 to 6-years-old.

Surgical biopsy is the method of choice for diagnosis of most equine skin cancers, but is contraindicated for cases of sarcoids. Prognosis and treatment effectiveness varies based on type of cancer, degree of local tissue destruction, evidence of spread to other organs (metastasis) and location of the tumor.

Not all cancers metastasize and some can be cured or mitigated by surgical removal of the cancerous tissue or through use of chemotherapeutic drugs.

Sarcoids account for 39.9% of all equine cancers and are the most common cancer diagnosed in horses. There is no breed predilection for developing sarcoids and they can occur at any age, with horses 3 to 6-years-old being the most common age group and males being slightly more prone to developing disease.

Sarcoids are also more prevalent in certain familial lines, suggesting that there may be a heritable component. Several studies have found an association between the presence of Bovine papillomavirus-1 and 2 and associated viral growth proteins in skin cells with sarcoid formation, but the exact mechanism that controls or induces epidermal proliferation remains unknown.

However, high viral loads within cells are strongly correlated with more severe clinical signs and aggressive lesions.

Horses and skin cancer diseaseThe appearance and number of sarcoids can vary with some horses having single or multiple lesions, usually on the head, legs, ventrum and genitalia or around a wound.

The distribution pattern suggests that flies are an important factor in the formation of sarcoids. Sarcoids may resemble warts (verrucous form), small nodules (nodular form), oval hairless or scaly plaques (occult form) or very rarely, large ulcerated masses (fibroblastic form).

The occult form usually presents on skin around the mouth, eyes or neck, while nodular and verrucous sarcoids are common on the groin, sheath or face. Fibroblastic sarcoids have a predilection for the legs, groin, eyelid and sites of previous injury.

Multiple forms may also be present on an individual horse (mixed form). Histologically, sarcoids are composed of fibroblasts (collagen producing cells) that invade and proliferate within the epidermis, dermis and sometimes the subcutaneous tissue but do not readily metastasize to other organs. Surgical biopsy can definitively diagnose sarcoids, but there is a significant risk of making sarcoids worse.

Therefore, diagnosis based solely on clinical signs, fine-needle aspiration or complete excisional biopsy are safer choices.

While sarcoids may spontaneously regress regardless of treatment in some instances, course and duration of disease is highly unpredictable and should be considered on a case-by-case basis taking into account cost of the treatment and severity of clinical signs. Surgical removal alone is not effective, with recurrence occurring in 50 to 64% of cases, but removal is often done in conjunction with other treatments.
    Do you like parrots?
Topical treatment with products containing bloodroot extract (from the plant Sanguinaria canadensis) for 7 to 10 days has been reported to be effective in removing small sarcoids, but the salve's caustic nature may cause pain and the sarcoid must be in an area where a bandage can be applied.

Freezing sarcoids with liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy) is another affordable method, but may result in scarring or depigmentation. Topical application of the anti-metabolite 5-fluorouracil has also obtained favorable results, but it usually takes 30 to 90 days of repeated application before any effect can be realized.

Injection of small sarcoids (usually around the eyes) with the chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin and the immunomodulator BCG have also achieved some success. In one trial, BCG was 69% effective in treating nodular and small fibroblastic sarcoids around the eye when repeatedly injected into the lesion and injection with cisplatin was 33% effective overall (mostly in horses with nodular sarcoids).

However, BCG treatment carries a risk of allergic reaction in some horses and cisplatin has a tendency to leak out of sarcoids during repeated dosing. External beam radiation can also be used on small sarcoids, but is often impractical.

There is a chance of sarcoid recurrence for all modalities even after apparently successful treatment. While sarcoids are not fatal, large aggressive tumors that destroy surrounding tissue can cause discomfort, loss of function and be resistant to treatment, making euthanasia a viable option in some instances. In fact, sarcoids may be the most common skin-related reason for euthanasia.

A blog for PetsSquamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common cancer of the eye, periorbital area and penis, and it is the second most common cancer overall in horses, accounting for 12 to 20% of all cancers diagnosed.

While SCC has been reported in horses aged 1 to 29-years, most cases occur in 8 to 15-year-old horses, making it the most common neoplasm reported in older horses.

Carcinomas are tumors derived from epithelial cells and SCC results from transformation and proliferation of squames, epidermal skin cells that become keratinized. Squamous-cell carcinomas are often solitary, slow-growing tumors that cause extensive local tissue destruction.

They can metastasize to other organs, with reported rates as high as 18.6%, primarily to the lymph nodes and lung.

Tumors related to squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) can appear anywhere on the body, but they are most often located in non-pigmented skin near mucocutaneous junctions (where skin meets mucous membranes) such as on the eyelids, around the nostrils, lips, vulva, prepuce, penis or anus. The tumors are raised, fleshy, often ulcerated or infected and may have an irregular surface.

Rarely, primary SCC develops in the esophagus, stomach (non-glandular portion), nasal passages and sinuses, the hard palate, gums, guttural pouches and lung. The eyelid is the most common site, accounting for 40-50% of cases, followed by male (25-10% of cases) and female (10% of cases) genitalia.

Horses with lightly pigmented skin, such as those with a gray hair coat or white faces, are especially prone to developing SCC, and some breeds, such as Clydesdales, may have a genetic predisposition. Exposure of light-colored skin to UV light has often been cited as a predisposing factor, but lesions can occur in dark skin and in areas that are not usually exposed to sunlight, such as around the anus.

Buildup of smegma ("the bean" in horseman's terms) on the penis is also linked to SCC and is thought to be a carcinogen through penile irritation. Pony geldings and work horses are more prone to developing SCC on the penis, due to less frequent penile washing when compared to stallions.

Equine papillomavirus-2 has also been found within penile SCCs, but has not been determined to cause SCC.

Before treatment of squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) is initiated, evidence of metastasis must be determined either by palpation and aspiration of lymph nodes around the mass or, in smaller horses, radiographs of the thorax. Small tumors found early in the disease process (most frequently on the eyelid) can be treated with cisplatin or radiation with favorable results.

For more advanced cases, surgical removal of eye (enucleation), mass or penile amputation can be curative provided all cancerous cells are removed (wide margins obtained) and there is no metastasis. However, young horses (usually geldings less than 8-years-old) that have a hard or "wooden" texture to SCCs on the glans penis have a very poor prognosis for treatment and recovery.

Regular washing of the penis and prepuce in males as well as cleaning the clitoral fossa (the groove around the clitoris) in mares is recommended to remove smegma buildup, which also gives the opportunity for inspection for suspicious growths on the penis or on the vulva.

Melanoma results from abnormal proliferation and accumulation of melanocytes, pigmented cells within the dermis. Gray horses over 6-years-old are especially prone to developing melanoma.

The prevalence of melanoma in gray horses over 15-years-old has been estimated at 80%. One survey of Camargue-type horses found an overall population prevalence of 31.4%, with prevalence increasing to 67% in horses over 15-years-old. Up to 66% of melanomas in gray horses are benign, but melanotic tumors in horses with darker hair-coats may be more aggressive and are more often malignant.

One retrospective study of cases sent to a referral hospital reported a 14% prevalence of metastatic melanoma within the study population. However, the actual prevalence of metastatic melanoma may be lower due to infrequent submission of melanotic tumors for diagnosis.

Common sites for metastasis include lymph nodes, the liver, spleen, lung, skeletal muscle, blood vessels and parotid salivary gland.

The most common sites for melanotic tumors are on the under-side of the tail near the base, on the prepuce, around the mouth or in the skin over the parotid gland (near the base of the ear). Tumors will initially begin as single, small raised areas that may multiply or coalesce into multi-lobed masses (a process called melanomatosis) over time.
    List of horses
Horses under 2-years-old can be born with or acquire benign melanotic tumors (called melanocytomas), but these tumors are often located on the legs or trunk, not beneath the tail as in older animals.
Treatment of small melanomas is often not necessary, but large tumors can cause discomfort and are usually surgically removed.

Cisplatin and cryotherapy can be used to treat small tumors less than 3 centimeters, but tumors may reoccur. Cimitidine, a histamine stimulator, can cause tumors to regress in some horses, but may take up to 3 months to produce results and multiple treatments may be needed throughout the horse's life.

There are few viable treatment options for horses with metastatic melanoma. However, gene therapy injections utilizing interleukin-12 and 18-encoding DNA plasmids have shown promise in slowing the progression of tumors in patients with metastatic melanoma.
