For the first time, Alamo Rent A Car and National Car Rental locations are serving customers in Brazil.? Five Brazilian airports ? Guarulhos International Airport in S?o Paulo; Galeao Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport in Rio de Janeiro; Tancredo Neves/Confins International Airport in Belo Horizonte; Brasilia International Airport in Brasilia; and Salgado Filho International Airport in Porto Alegre ? are home to new Alamo and National locations.

A recent franchise agreement between Enterprise Holdings ? owner and operator of Alamo and National, as well as its flagship Enterprise Rent-A-Car brand in North America ? and S?o Paulo-based Unidas, a leading Brazilian car rental operator, will bring the Alamo and National brands to more than 100 Unidas airport and city locations throughout Brazil by March 2013. ?We are pleased to introduce the Alamo and National brands to the Brazilian market with the opening of these first five locations,? said Greg Stubblefield, executive vice president of global sales, marketing and strategy for Enterprise Holdings. ?This partnership with Unidas ? a company that strongly shares our belief in customer service ? both expands travelers? options and presents tremendous growth opportunities for all three brands throughout Latin America.?

Practices That Receive Good Results In Forum Marketing ? Indie ...

There are a number of major internet marketing forums on the net, as many of you might be mindful. There are very real do?s and don?ts when it comes to efficient promoting on any kind of forum. Incidentally, this does not apply to just doing internet business on marketing forums as there are many thousands on non-marketing related forums online. There?s a small assortment of general suggestions you can follow that will allow you to experience positive effects on any forum. You can get far simply by exhibiting good conduct and making others view you in a positive way. But nonetheless you are definitely expected to be yourself, even so if you want to effectively market anything on a forum you must avoid being negative, all round.

We need not look for further examples than Kindle Ritual reviews. When you first make your new forum account, then what you need to do is take time to get a feel for the place without jumping immediately into the fire ? except when you want to. So you will simply avoid a lot of, if any, debate and look at the overall activity and acquire a feel for the dynamics. Unsurprisingly, all forums contain a part of the people who started them, and then that also is accurate for the bulk of people in the forum. If you think you will arrive and inflict a new set of rules on a forum, then you will be in for a rude and very quick lesson in forum manners, rules and culture. You should find out what the general cues are in any online community, and we mean the nuances that exist and are quite real.

One typically really bad idea is to instantly begin advertising whatever it is you are promoting. Do find out if you can indulge in any kind of marketing promotions, and if not then just move on as there is no motive to stay. There is purely no way to market anything, and spamming by private emails will in all probability get you restricted in a very short time.

Eventually you have to become known, and the very best way to do that is to basically supply helpful information. Community forums can be ruthless places, and if your knowledge is incorrect in some major way, then it can get awkward and your standing could be ruined. So simply help people as much as practical and in an ideal amount.

Filmmaker Documents Coast Guard Rescue Crew - Half Moon Bay ...

The life of an independent film maker can be unpredictable and precarious, at least financially speaking, but it can also provide some pretty cool experiences. Documentarian David Wittkower realized that recently when he filmed Guardians of the Gate: The Surf Boats.

The movie documents the U.S. Coast Guard?s second busiest station in the country, Station Golden Gate, the surfmen who serve there and the boats they use.

Wittkower spent part of last year on the station?s 47-foot surfboats.

The aluminum-finished boats are powered by two 435-horsepower motors, can take on 30-foot waves, tow up to 150 tons, speed along at 25 knots (or 28.8 miles per hour) and even roll all the way over. If the boat capsizes, it?s designed to right itself in less than 15 seconds.

While filming, Wittkower and his small crew of cameramen didn?t experience a rollover, but they did get jolted around and slammed as the boats rode up and down 25-foot swells. He found quickly that trying to hold a camera steady while also holding on to the boat to remain standing wasn?t going to work.

"When you get past the Golden Gate, the waves get rough really quickly," he said, adding that he mounted small cameras all over the boat and relied on those a lot because "after a while, you're just holding on."

"It's a bit of a rough ride, but it's fun," he said.

Wittkower was on hand as Coast Guard personnel practiced, patrolled and made rescues near the Golden Gate Bridge in the San Francisco Bay and beyond.

The crew at the station, located on the north side of the bridge, is responsible for helping distressed fishing, recreational and cargo boats; rescuing wind- and kite-surfers who find themselves in trouble; and recovering bodies of people who jump from the bridge, which happens about once every week or two, according to one of the Coast Guard officials in the film.

The latter is, naturally, a duty that hits the crew hard, especially as they think of themselves in terms of being rescuers and lifesavers.

"When you come into the Coast Guard, a lot of times you're coming in to save lives, to be helpful," Boatswain Mate First Class Jessica Shafer explained in the film. "This is one of the few military branches where you can actually truly say that you are there soley to be a rescuer, to save lives, not take lives."

Wittkower noted that during one week in May 2011 10 people jumped from the bridge.

"It's tough for an 18- or 20-year old to have to come in and deal with that," he said. "That's their Iraq."

This isn?t the first time Wittkower, a 15-year Woodland Hills resident and Pierce College instructor, has worked with the Coast Guard. His first project was documenting the Guard?s tall ship, the Eagle. It was Coast Guard representatives who suggested documenting the surfboats and Station Golden Gate.

Previously, Wittkower has produced films about wildland firefighters and rodeos. The latter proved especially difficult because some of the rodeo participants were leary of having a camera close by.

"I asked the Coast Guard if I could film the surfboats and they said, 'Sure, what do you want to do?' I have to say that working with the military is easier than working with cowboys," he said.

In total, Wittkower has produced 11 films and won 27 film festival awards.

He finished Guardians in March. It's already been screened in his native Massachusetts. It will be screened at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, in August during Coast Guard Appreciation Week, and a Maryland PBS station plans to broadcast it soon.

The film will then be broadcast on KQED in November. Here's the program schedule for upcoming broadcasts:

  • KQED 9: Tue, Nov 13, 2012 -- 9:00pm?
  • KQED 9: Wed, Nov 14, 2012 -- 3:00am?

  • KQED World: Wed, Nov 28, 2012 -- 7:00am?

Wittkower continues shopping the film for other venues and television stations.

John Terry faces ?800,000 legal bill over Anton Ferdinand race row ...

JOHN TERRY faces a mega ?800,000 bill over the Anton Ferdinand race row.

And Chelsea will not pay a penny of it.

JT was ?disappointed? after the FA yesterday found him guilty of racially abusing the QPR defender.

He copped a four-game ban and an FA record ?220,000 fine.

But that is only a fraction of the sum Chelsea?s captain spent fighting his case.

Terry, 31, has run up legal fees estimated at ?750,000 battling his criminal and FA charges.

He hopes to recoup around ?400,000 from the court case, where he was found not guilty.

But the ex-England skipper is now liable to pay the costs of the FA hearing, too, said to be at least ?200,000.

That brings his total bill to a whopping ?770,000.

But if Terry decides to continue his fight and appeal against the FA?s punishment, his legal bill will rise even further.

A statement issued on his behalf said: ?Mr Terry is disappointed that the FA commission has reached a different conclusion to the clear not guilty verdict of a court of law.

?He has asked for the detailed written reasons of the decision and will consider them carefully before deciding whether to lodge an appeal.?

Terry has 14 days from receiving the FA commission?s written report to decide what to do next.

His fine and ban will be suspended until any appeal is heard, the 14 days expire or Terry announces he will not appeal.

But if the Blues defender does appeal and loses, the FA?s punishment could be increased.

Terry announced on Sunday he was quitting international football, claiming the FA had made his position in the England team untenable by continuing to persue the charge against him.

Westminster Magistrates cleared him in July of racially abusing Ferdinand, 27, after Chelsea?s Premier League clash at QPR last October.

Terry admitted in court using obscene words towards Ferdinand ? but not as a racist insult.

A club statement last night said: ?Chelsea Football Club notes and respects today?s decision.

?We also recognise that John has the right to appeal that decision.

?It is therefore inappropriate for us to comment further on the matter at this time.?

Rejuvenated Moody Campus Radio launches Sept. 24 | The Moody ...

by Molly Sipling correspondent

On Sept. 24, Moody Campus Radio ? updated with new equipment and streaming software ? launched fresh programming under the guidance of an all-new executive committee. Its new web site launched on the same date.

Shane O?Regan, sophomore communications major and MCR station manager, is eager to be set up in MCR?s new facilities on Sweeting 4, the new creative media home for communications majors. ?We?ll be feeding off the creative energy up there just by being around other creatives,? he said. ?We already feel more connected to the student body than we did in our offices in Fitzwater.? The executive committee is excited for their new web presence as well, which they say has the possibility to be an amazing creative platform for them to connect with the student body.

MCR is hosting new and returning shows on current events, theology, sports and varying genres of music. There is more diversity and greater professionalism within the programs due to a recently formed partnership with Moody Radio. Joe Mally, sophomore children?s ministry major and operations manager of MCR, said, ?The partnership with MCR and Moody Radio will provide us with mentors who do our jobs full-time. It will also provide opportunities for the MCR team to help with concerts and other events hosted by Moody Radio.?

The executive committee is also excited about the increased involvement and support from professors in the communications department who are willing to work for the success of MCR. Among them is Brian Kammerzelt, assistant professor and chair of the communications department. ?MCR is one of the anchor practicums for the communications major ? an integral part of teaching and learning radio station management, audio production, marketing, web design and much more,? he said. ?MCR is also one of our core student leadership teams that will provide guidance in their specialties to peers across the program and campus.?

Kammerzelt continues, ?Furthermore, MCR provides a direct link to our relationship with Moody Radio, who are increasingly invested in our radio/audio curriculum.?

As MCR comes back on air, O?Regan encourages students to get involved. He said, ?MCR is a place of nurture. I?m learning, we?re all learning. Ministering t the individual student at Moody is at the heart of what we do. It is by students, for students.? Members of the executive committee emphasize that students from any major are welcome. O?Regan affirms that MCR?s focus is on the students of MBI.

?Media is merely our tool. We?re about the individual,? O?Regan said. ?Moody is smothered in untold stories of grace, triumph, hope. MCR is all about the power of stories expressed through media to bring us together in unity and vulnerability.?

MCR executive committee members encourage students to check out the new website and listen in to the station?s new and returning shows at http://moodycampusradio.com/, going back on-air throughout the week of Sept. 24.

You do realise that your/delfiler's hordes of one liners may have been scaring people away. Also as a guild a group is supposed to interact with each other evenly as to prevent a character from just being isolated. That's kind of why I wanted to go to the bar.

Bromander and I have posted our fair share. The others have yet to be introduced/interacted with. You and delfiler have gone to do werewolf conversions. I think your jumping the gun on this since the RP is only three days old. I think you should wait for another week or so.

NFL upholds Seahawks' disputed win over Packers

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL put its stamp of approval on the still-smoldering outcome of the Green Bay-Seattle game:

Wrong call.

Right review.

Wrong team still wins.

Seahawks 14, Packers 12.

With frustration mounting among coaches, players and fans, the worst fear finally materialized: a mistake by a replacement official would decide the outcome of a game.

It came while the NFL and its regular officials, locked out since June, were in resumed talks in an attempt to resolve the impasse.

That was still a day late for the Packers.

The fiasco, which unfolded on the prominent stage of "Monday Night Football," was deconstructed by the league Tuesday in a way that surely rendered little comfort for Cheeseheads.

The NFL said Seattle's last-second touchdown pass should not have counted because Seahawks receiver Golden Tate should have been called for offensive pass interference, ending the game with Green Bay winning.

Instead, officials ruled it a touchdown, and penalties either way are not reviewable.

That left it to whether Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings both had possession of the ball. The officials said they did, but the Packers insisted Jennings had clear possession for a game-ending interception. The NFL agreed that the replay was inconclusive, upholding the touchdown and giving Seattle the victory.

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, normally a soft-spoken player who didn't say much after the loss, lashed out on his radio show Tuesday..

"First of all, I've got to do something that the NFL is not going to do: I have to apologize to the fans," he said on ESPN 540-AM in Milwaukee.

Even President Barack Obama got in on the conversation Tuesday, tweeting: "NFL fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs' lockout is settled soon."

The controversy began on the final play when Russell Wilson heaved a 24-yard pass into a scrum in the end zone with Seattle trailing 12-7. Tate shoved away a defender with both hands, and he and Jennings got their hands on the ball.

"It was pinned to my chest the whole time," Jennings said.

Instead, the officials ruled on the field that the two had simultaneous possession, which counts as a reception.

"The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review," the league said in a statement.

Saying there was no indisputable evidence, though, is not the same as confirming the initial call was correct.

The Packers, one of sports' most storied franchises and Super Bowl champs two years ago, fell to 1-2. The Seahawks are 2-1.

Fans' fascination with the finish was evident in the number who stayed with ESPN to watch the highlights on "SportsCenter" after the game: 6.5 million viewers, the most for the full-length show since records started being kept in 1990.

On his weekly appearance on Seattle radio station 710 KIRO-AM, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made no apologies Tuesday, saying, "The league backed it up and game over. We win."

"Golden makes an extraordinary effort. It's a great protection. It's a great throw. It's a great attempt at the ball and he wins the battle," he said. "They were right on the point looking right at it, standing right over the thing and they reviewed it. Whether they missed the push or not ? obviously they missed the push in the battle for the ball ? but that stuff goes on all the time."

But Rodgers, in a reference to referee Wayne Elliott not seeing indisputable evidence, said: "I mean, come on, Wayne. That's embarrassing."

NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith posted a statement to members saying the lockout "jeopardizes your health and safety."

"This decision to remove more than 1,500 years of collective experience has simply made the workplace less safe," he wrote, adding, "We are actively reviewing any and all possible actions to protect you."

The NFL locked out the officials in June after their contract expired. Unable to reach a new collective bargaining agreement, the league opened the season with replacements, most with experience only in lower levels of college football.

Coaches and players began griping about the officials in the preseason, but the tension seemed to boil over this past weekend.

Scuffles after the whistle were frequent with players appearing to test the limits of the new officials, and coaches were fined for berating them.

Las Vegas oddsmakers said $300 million or more changed hands worldwide on Monday's call. The Glantz-Culver line for the game opened favoring the Packers by 4?. Had the play been ruled an interception, Green Bay would have won by 5.

The call also found its way into Wisconsin politics, with Republican Gov. Scott Walker tweeting for the regular officials to return. Opponents noted that he seemed to be supporting the referees union after going after public employee unions last year, though Democratic state Sen. Jon Erpenbach added: "We're all fans, first and foremost."

Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy was stoic after the game, but Packers guard T.J. Lang vented on Twitter, using some expletives to say Green Bay was robbed by the refs. A day later, he said he regretted only his use of profanity.

"It was just heartbreaking to have a game taken from us like that," he told 97-FM The Ticket in Detroit. "We put way too much effort, and blood, sweat and tears into these games to have one absolutely stolen from us."

Good Food vs Bad Food - Fitness Nutrition Denver Boulder

Posted on by FitNut ?

Good food versus bad food. Who knows the answer when it changes every week!

The media loves this one; every few weeks they pick on one of your favorites. One week, your coffee is a health food and the next it is a health-villain. Chocolate, wine, beer, and yogurt: these days it seems almost impossible to figure out which foods keep your health in check. The mistake we are making in this colossal debate comes from the emphasis on ?Good? and ?Bad?. The truth of the matter comes in the word ?Food?.

Good Food vs Bad FoodWhat is ?food? anyway? Walking through your local grocery store, you are bound to find a wide variety of advertisements and labels bespeaking all of the health benefits ?contained within?. But, is it food? You would need a college degree in chemistry with an emphasis in industrial food processing to be able to fully decipher most processed food labels.

Additionally, you might want to rent a crystal ball to clue you in on the stuff not reported on food labels. Chances are if they don?t want you to know it is in there, your body doesn?t assimilate it as food. I am also suspicious that there is a big difference between ?recommended daily allowance? and ?safe limits for human consumption?. Creating a convenient processed food with extensive shelf life takes a lot of chemistry voodoo.

?Low Fat? ?No Calories? ?Low Carb?: what is the point? Now we have ?Bad? macronutrient classes! What is the point of food if not to supply energy and nutrients to your body? The other part of the equation is that not a single one of those nutrients works in isolation. Nutrients are like a universe where every one thing works in synergy with all the other things. When you start picking out single items, you effectively hobble the nutrient universe.

what is food - Jaye AlynnSo what is food? I say that it is anything you can get without a label. Whenever you have the opportunity, opt for a piece of fruit or a vegetable over the ?100-calorie? snack pack. Your body will thank you as you spare your liver and your immune system the task of breaking down the chemistry experiment in your ?heart healthy?, reduced calorie snack. Good food versus bad food isn?t the problem. It?s knowing that food is natural not born in a chemistry lab.

Bernanke wants you to buy stocks, but risk is high

Ben Bernanke hopes his latest plan to stimulate the economy will get you to buy stocks and other risky assets. Maybe you should. People who did that after two similar Federal Reserve efforts are sitting on big gains today.

But the odds of fat profits aren't looking as good this time, and seem to be getting worse.

Stocks rose sharply before the Fed chairman announced his plans Sept. 13 instead of falling, as they did before the two previous efforts, suggesting less room for gains now.

Meanwhile, the world economy is slowing and Wall Street analysts are cutting estimates for future corporate profits. They expect them to fall this quarter from a year earlier, the first drop since just after the Great Recession ended 3? years ago.

"The market seems like it's climbing on central bank intervention rather than fundamentals," says Gary Flam, chief stock manager at Bel Air Investment Advisors. "I'm not a buyer right now."

The outlook for other risky assets like high-yield bonds is darkening, too.

The highly indebted companies that issue these bonds, popularly known as junk bonds, usually offer fat interest payments to compensate investors for the risk that the companies will default.

Not now. In response to previous Fed stimulus plans, investors have poured money into these bonds, driving prices up and yields, which move in the opposite direction, down to 6 percent, the lowest on record. In the boom years before the recession, the lowest yield was more than two points higher.

"We have a high-yield bond market without yield, and the Fed's fingerprints are on this," says James Grant, editor of the newsletter Grant's Interest Rate Observer. "If debt prices turn out grossly overvalued, won't it owe an explanation for people who lost money?"

Earlier this month, the Fed chairman said the central bank would spend $40 billion each month buying mortgage bonds until the economy strengthens, and maybe even after. In its two previous programs, called quantitative easing, the Fed bought $2 trillion worth of Treasury and mortgage bonds.

The idea is to frustrate holders of conservative assets, like Treasurys, so they'll have no choice but to shift money into riskier fare. As they do, prices will rise, making people richer and willing to spend more money. And that, at least in theory, will speed economic growth.

Some critics argue the Fed has failed, noting that the U.S. economy grew at just 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter. But you can't deny it's been successful at least in part: People have moved money into riskier assets, and prices have jumped.

Since the Federal Reserve launched its first bond-buying program in November 2008, high-yield bonds have gained 68 percent, or 14.5 percent annually, 1.5 times their typical return, according to Martin Fridson of FridsonVision, a high-yield research firm. Meanwhile, the Standard & Poor's 500 index, in price alone, has gained 85 percent.

In 2012, the S&P 500 has risen 16 percent, almost all of it since June in anticipation of the Fed's new stimulus.

It's possible stocks will continue to climb. The S&P 500 is trading at 14 times its expected per-share earnings for the next 12 months, which doesn't appear expensive. This earnings multiple was lower ? meaning stocks were cheaper ? at the start of the first Fed stimulus, in November 2008, but only slightly: It was 12.9, according to S&P Capital IQ, a research firm. At the start of the Fed's second round of bond-buying, in November 2010, the S&P traded at 14 times, the same as today.

But stocks seemed just as expensive then as they do now because expectations for earnings then were low. Since the recovery began, Wall Street analysts have mostly been scrambling to raise their expectations, not cutting them, as they are now. They were surprised how much companies were able to sell abroad, slash expenses and get more work out of smaller staffs.

Last year, companies in the S&P 500 squeezed a record $8.80 in profit out of every $100 in sales, up from $5.90 after the first Fed program, according to Goldman Sachs. But now these profit margins are falling for the first time in the recovery, and revenue growth is dropping as Europe slips into recession and many developing countries slow.

And the bad news keeps coming. On Tuesday, FedEx, considered a bellwether because its shipping operations span the globe, said that trading volumes had slowed to recession levels. On Thursday, railroad giant Norfolk Southern dropped 9 percent after reporting a steep fall in shipments.

If the economy continues to slow, or falls into a recession, investors in high-yield bonds will get hurt, too. They appear to be reassured by the low number of bonds defaulting now, about 3 percent. But defaults could rise fast. In 2008, defaults peaked at 13 percent, clobbering investors in high-yield. Investors in mutual funds holding so-called junk lost 26 percent that year, according to Morningstar, a fund tracker.

"If you need income, you don't have much choice but to go to riskier assets," says Fridson, the junk bond expert. But he adds, "If the country falls back into recession, people will face losses."

Should junk tumble, Grant, the newsletter editor, quips that Bernanke should consider a "handwritten apology" to investors or possibly a spoken one on "60 Minutes." But he holds out the possibility prices will continue to rise, noting that the Fed's efforts to stimulate the economy, as well as similar bond-buying plans by central banks in Europe and Japan, are unprecedented.

"One can't be dogmatic about likely outcomes of an untried, worldwide experiment," Grant says. "We're all lab rats. Investors are lab rats."

Count George Cipolloni, former bull, among the worrywarts.

Last year, when other investors were selling stocks and junk because of fear the U.S. was about to fall into another recession, Cipolloni, co-manager of the Berwyn Income Fund, bought by the armload, just as he did in previous market dips. Since 2009, his fund has returned 54 percent.

But he's selling now, and piling up cash. It now accounts for 24 percent of the fund's holdings, up from 7 percent about a year ago.

"We're trying to be as risk-averse as possible," Cipolloni says. "We don't want to lose money."

Frustration, turmoil as world leaders meet

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Democratic uprisings across the Arab world and the Palestinians' bid for U.N. membership sparked excitement and hope at last year's meeting of world leaders. But with war raging in Syria, the Palestinian application sidelined, and deadly protests generated by an anti-Islamic video, the mood as this year's U.N. gathering begins is one of disappointment and frustration.

More than 120 presidents, prime ministers and monarchs meeting this week under heavy security at the U.N. General Assembly and in sideline events will also be preoccupied by rising tension over Iran's nuclear program and the possibility of an Israeli strike against Tehran's nuclear facilities, al-Qaida's inroads in the Sahel region of west Africa, especially in Mali, and the first decline in years in international aid to help developing countries combat poverty.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon predicted that the ministerial session, which starts Tuesday, will be among the busiest ever, reflecting "the tumultuous time in which we live ? a time of turmoil and transition." It is also taking place "against a backdrop of widespread violence linked to intolerance," he said.

Ahead of the opening ministerial session, which President Barack Obama will address, the U.N. chief has invited leaders to the first high-level meeting on the rule of law on Monday, hoping they "will send a strong signal to the world's people that they are serious about establishing well-functioning institutions and delivering justice."

Diplomats aren't expecting any breakthroughs on the deadlock over Syria, which Ban said "will be foremost in our minds," despite a number of sideline meetings starting Monday when the new U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi briefs the U.N. Security Council behind closed doors on his recent talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad and other leaders in the region.

"To increase pressure and to increase the isolation of the regime of Assad is one of the goals of this week," Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told reporters Sunday.

The Syrian conflict has bitterly divided the most powerful members of the Security Council, paralyzing the only U.N. body that can impose global sanctions and authorize military action. Russia, Syria's key protector, and China, have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Assad to stop the violence and start political talks with opponents of his family's 40-year dictatorship who began demonstrating against his regime 18 months ago.

Germany's U.N. Ambassador Peter Wittig, the current Security Council president, said "change in the Arab world" will be uppermost in the minds of the leaders ? as was the case at last year's session.

Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi, an Islamist who was sworn in on June 30 after the first democratic elections in the country's modern history, will be addressing the 193-member assembly for the first time on Wednesday. So too will Yemen's President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who took office in February following more than a year of political turmoil and is now trying to steer the country's transition to democracy.

Last year, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas stole the spotlight with his submission of an application for Palestine to become the 194th member state of the United Nations. The United States, Israel's closest ally, made clear that it would veto any application until the Palestinians and Israelis negotiate an end to their decades-long conflict.

So Abbas is expected to come to the General Assembly on Thursday with a more modest proposal ? to upgrade Palestine's current status as a U.N. observer to a non-member observer state ? but likely putting off the date for submission of a resolution to the assembly, where there are no vetoes, until after the U.S. presidential election in November.

The Palestinians expect overwhelming support from the assembly for the enhanced U.N. status, which they hope will give broad international legitimacy to the pre-1967 lines as Palestine's border and grant them access to U.N. agencies and possibly the International Criminal Court.

With no sign of an end to the Security Council's paralysis over Syria, Wittig said Germany chose to focus the council's ministerial session Wednesday on something new and positive in the Mideast ? "the emergence of the Arab League as a regional actor that has proved to be essential for conflict resolution."

The 21-member Arab League has shaken off decades of near total submission to the will of the region's leaders and is seeking to transform itself following the seismic changes brought about by the Arab Spring. The league has supported the rebels who ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and suspended Syria in response to Assad's brutal crackdown against his opponents.

"This organization is promoting the values that the United Nations is standing for ? human rights, rule of law, democracy, pluralism," the fight against corruption and promoting economic opportunity, Wittig said.

Another issue looming large over the ministerial session is Iran's nuclear program, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convinced that the Iranians are close to developing a nuclear weapon ? which Tehran vehemently denies.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who will step down next year, makes his final speech to the General Assembly on Wednesday. Netanyahu speaks on Thursday, before a closed-door meeting of senior diplomats, and possibly ministers, from the six countries trying to rein in Iran's nuclear ambitions ? the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.

Secretary-General Ban met Ahmadinejad on Sunday and "urged Iran to take the measures necessary to build international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

The U.N. chief also raised the potentially harmful consequences of inflammatory rhetoric "from various countries in the Middle East" and "the grave regional implications of the worsening situation in Syria and underlined the devastating humanitarian impact," Nesirky said.

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, said the U.S.-produced film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad will be at the top of the agenda of a ministerial meeting of its 57 members on the sidelines of the assembly. He said the international community needs to unite behind action to implement international law which warns against any advocacy of religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, aggression or violence.

There will also be sessions to promote the achievement of U.N. anti-poverty goals by 2015, sustainable energy and an end to polio.

'World News' Political Insights: Shifting Ground Beneath Mitt Romney's Campaign Adds to Challenges

ANALYSIS

Mitt Romney is looking for traction in a race that's seeing the ground shift beneath his feet.

The normal difficulties of finding the campaign's "reset" button are complicated by more than a series of losing news cycles, verbal gaffes, and party infighting.

Six weeks before Election Day - and just 10 days before the first presidential debate - Romney finds himself confronting a daunting battleground landscape. Polling averages in the eight states ABC News considers toss-ups for the fall show President Obama ahead in all of them, with the Obama advantage largest in the virtual must-wins of Ohio and Virginia.

Even the economy, long the rationale for Romney's candidacy, is slipping away as a natural area of advantage for the challenger. A series of recent polls in battleground states show Obama with a narrow edge on trust on the economy, numbers that have inched along with perceptions of the country moving toward a positive direction.

The big national trends still suggest a strong environment for the challenger. Unemployment remains north of 8 percent, while national tracking polls continue to put the race inside a few percentage points.

On one very big question - whether voters view the nation as on the right track, or the wrong track - pollsters are still finding the wrong track dominating by more than 20 points on average, even accounting for the recent trend toward the right track.

Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said today said he felt good about last week, despite the fact that Romney's comment about 47 percent of the country viewing themselves as "victims" who are "dependent" on the federal government consumed much of the news coverage.

"I think that we had a good week last week, I think in retrospect, in that we were able to frame up the debate last week in the sense of, what future do we want," Priebus said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

That sentiment isn't shared anywhere close to universally, even inside the Republican Party. Romney officials realize it's on them - and particularly on their candidate - to break through with the crisp case for his election that's been lacking to date.

The situation puts more pressure on Romney to deliver in the presidential debates, particularly the first encounter Oct. 3 in Denver. His campaign needs to create major moments to change the trajectory of the race, and no opportunity is as ready-made for that as much as the first debate. Romney can make his case on the economy face-to-face with the president.

Romney has more recent practice, having come off a primary campaign where he engaged with his opponents some 19 times in televised debates. Obama's last debates, of course, came four years ago.

Romney entered the primary debates as the favorite, and could stand back while his opponents unloaded on each other. He won't have that luxury this time around - but that should be a welcome feeling, as time for him to turn the campaign around is evaporating.

Romney focuses on California fundraising

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) ? Facing criticism that he's too focused on raising campaign cash, Mitt Romney is about to launch what advisers call an "intense battleground state schedule." But on Saturday, the Republican presidential nominee focused exclusively on courting donors in a state that hasn't supported a Republican presidential candidate in almost a quarter century.

Speaking to roughly 650 supporters gathered at Grand Del Mar, a luxury hotel north of San Diego, Romney said his campaign schedule has been hectic.

"I'm not even going to be able to go home today," he said of his second home in nearby La Jolla. "We're just coming to town to see you and keep the campaign going. It's nonstop."

The former Massachusetts governor's schedule, particularly his focus on fundraising over campaigning in battleground states with voters, has drawn criticism from some Republicans who fear the campaign is moving in the wrong direction less than seven weeks before Election Day. President Barack Obama on Saturday campaigned in Wisconsin, which has emerged as a swing state, where he also raised money.

Polls suggest that Obama has a narrow lead in several key states.

Romney adviser Kevin Madden defended the fundraising focus, while highlighting a shift in the coming days

"We're here raising the resources we're going to need to compete in all those battleground states through Election Day," Madden said. "That's also been matched with a really intense battle ground state schedule that's going to be coming up starting Sunday night. We're keeping very busy."

Over the last week, Romney has attended five public events and at least a dozen fundraisers.

Cognizant of the criticism, his campaign added a Colorado rally to his Sunday night schedule ahead of a three-day bus tour in Ohio. He'll also campaign in Virginia next week. All three states are considered highly competitive.

The shift comes as Romney works to get his campaign back on track.

Already facing reports of campaign infighting, Romney suffered another setback early in the week after his remarks surfaced in an unauthorized video declaring that almost half of Americans are dependent upon government and believe they are victims. On Friday, Romney released his 2011 tax returns showing income of $13.6 million, largely from investment income.

Earlier in the week, conservative columnist Peggy Noonan called Romney's campaign "incompetent."

"Romney doesn't seem to be out there campaigning enough. He seems_in this he is exactly like the president_to always be disappearing into fund-raisers, and not having enough big public events," wrote the former Ronald Reagan speechwriter.

Romney, who would be among the wealthiest presidents ever elected, has struggled to shed the image of an out-of-touch millionaire.

At the Saturday fundraiser donors paid as much as $25,000 to attend, he did little to help that image. He told the audience he spent the night before raising money at a San Francisco area mansion.

"Property up there is, I'm sure, very, very expensive. And we got to her driveway ? it was at least a mile long, up and up, it's like, Oh my goodness, how in the world?" Romney said. "And then we came to the home, and it was like San Simeon, you know, the Hearst castle. It was this beautiful home with gardens, manicured gardens, and a pool and a topiary and so forth."

Romney charged that the president is taking America on a "pathway to become like Europe," adding a jab at his audience's home state.

"Europe doesn't work there. It's never going to work here," Romney said. "It's even possible we could be on a pathway to become California ? I don't want that either."

He later said he was joking.

And before promising that he was done raising money in the San Diego area, Romney encouraged his California donors to help him reach voters in more competitive states.

"I need you to find someone who voted for Barack Obama, maybe in a swing state, and give him a call, and tell him to go to the polls and support this effort," he said.
