Bentleigh Secondary College in Melbourne, the capital of the southern Australian state of Victoria, has been recognised as the world?s most Sustainable Educational Institution.
The win was announced at the award ceremony for the International Green Awards at a glittering ceremony at London?s iconic Battersea Power Station.
Representatives from participating countries in attendance from around the world included Australia, Europe, Indonesia, Kenya and the Republic of Korea.
The Royal Society of Arts accredited awards program, sponsored by Japanese carmaker Nissan, was heralded a huge success with almost 400 guests and sustainability champions in attendance from government, business and NGO?s.
Australia had five finalists in this year?s awards including Sydney printer Focus Press, Sydney Theatre Company, Hitachi, City of Sydney and Bentleigh Secondary College.
Focus Press and Hitachi both won bronze awards.
Sustainability industry spokesperson and Models of Success & Sustainability (MOSS) CEO Anne-Maree Huxley said ?It was not long ago that Australia was considered in some circles to be 10 years behind in sustainability innovation and governance.
?After recently hosting the International Green Award?s Business, Innovation and Sustainability Summits in Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth to unveil and showcase Australian best practice, having five Australian organisations as finalists and Bentleigh Secondary College as a global winner, I think it?s fair to say we?ve caught up and in some sectors are clearly leading the way?.

At the awards the heir to the British throne, Prince Charles, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Prince Charles, who was unable to attend due to international commitments had pre-recorded a message from St James Palace in acceptance of his award.
He commented ? If we are really going to meet the needs of nine billion people by 2050 and keep nature?s capital intact we have to bring about a substantial transformation in the way we do things?.
The Prince of Wales has been an environmental leader for more than 40 years, working with businesses, charities, governments and other organisations to help promote sustainable ways of living and working.
Other 2012 winners included: Interface (UK), Most Sustainable Large Corporate;?Yealands Estate Wines (NZ), Most Sustainable Medium Business; AJDR (Rwanda), Most Sustainable Small Business; Songpa-Gu Council (Republic of Korea), Most Sustainable Government; Sahabat Alam (Indonesia), Most Sustainable NGO; YouGen (UK), WWF?s Game Changer.
Ian Somerhalder, internationally acclaimed actor from Vampire Diaries was recognised as this years Most Responsible Celebrity with the overall Grand Prix award going to Interface.
