Mayor call work of fire, police and sheriff's department 'heroic' following factory's chemical fire

By Jennifer Zartman Romano Providing an update for local residents, many of whom expressed confusion and concern regarding the chemical fire today at the C&R Plating factory in Columbia City, Mayor Ryan Daniel issued an assessment of the situation this evening. Reports indicate the fire started about 1 p.m. and the city's fire department was dispatched to the scene. "After receiving information on the suspected chemical, they attempted to put the fire out," Daniel said. "After methods failed to work, additional information was obtained regarding the chemical (Sodium Hydrosulfite-F) and their strategy changed." Outside, city police, aided by county sheriff's deputies, began to divert traffic and evacuate the area. Meanwhile, Whitley County and Fort Wayne Haz-mat were called to the scene as was Whitley County?s Emergency Management Agency, Daniel said. "Eight blocks around the Chauncey and Line Street areas were evacuated at that time to prevent additional exposure to the fumes. An additional six blocks to the north of the evacuated area were asked to shut windows and turn off air conditioning units to prevent fumes from entering buildings," he added. Daniel says the fire was extinguished around 2:45 p.m. and the chemicals were disposed of carefully.
