The climax of the government shutdown provided Fox News Channel with a good showcase for its week-and-a-half-old lineup. The cable net led in the demo ratings surge throughout Wednesday as the political stalemate came to an end and President Obama made public remarks.
Ratings spiked during the 8 p.m. hour, helmed by Bill O'Reilly on FNC, when the president spoke. Fox hit 534,000 viewers among the adults 25-54 demographic.
Across all of primetime, FNC averaged 489,000 adults 25-54 and 2.212 million viewers. (Those are respective jumps of 50 and 20 percent compared to last quarter, though viewership was down from the 2.5 million last Wednesday.)
CNN swelled in total viewers (1.272 million) and the demo (375,000), more than doubling its showings last Wednesday, but it was only among adults 25-54 where it managed to top MSNBC. The latter took second place to FNC in total viewers with 1.361 million and pulled 338,000 in the demo.
Total day saw a smaller spread in the demo. FNC topped with 294,000 adults 25-54, up 5 percent from last week, followed by CNN's 225,000 and MSNBC's 173,000. FNC won viewers with 1.361 million, while MSNBC (712,000) and CNN (711,000) were almost evenly matched. Fox dipped in total viewers, while CNN and MSNBC were up in both measures.
Not two weeks into her primetime tenure, Megyn Kelly also won the late-night battle with 1.176 million viewers and 302,000 adults 25-54. The big three stayed live with President Obama as he signed off on the deal to resume government activity.
